Not Everything Labeled “Christian” is Christ-Centered

We live in a world where deception isn’t just lurking in the shadows—it’s out in the open, wrapped in a “Christian” label, and marketed as truth. From movies to music, from books to influencers, many things claim to be Christian but are subtly twisting Scripture, blending truth with error, and leading people into compromise.

And that’s exactly why Christians should be the most discerning people in the world.

The Bible repeatedly warns us to test everything. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). We often think of deception as something obvious, but Satan knows that outright lies wouldn’t fool most believers. Instead, he mixes just enough truth with error to make it seem harmless.

Think about it. How many times have we heard:

  • “It’s just entertainment—it doesn’t really affect me.”
  • “But they said ‘God’ in the song, so it must be fine.”
  • “This preacher is super popular, so he must be teaching the truth.”

Yet when we hold these things up to Scripture, we often find messages that contradict God’s Word, prioritize emotions over truth, and subtly push worldly ideas instead of biblical ones. If Satan can’t get us to reject Christianity outright, he’ll settle for making us comfortable with a distorted version of it.

So, what can we do?

How to Stay Spiritually Discerning

  1. Know the Bible for Yourself 📖
If we don’t know the truth, we won’t recognize a lie. Make Bible study a daily habit—not just reading, but really digging deep and asking, What does God’s Word actually say?
  2. Test Everything Against Scripture 🔎
Just because something has Christian branding doesn’t mean it aligns with Christ. Music, movies, sermons, social media influencers—hold them all up to the light of God’s Word.
  3. Watch for the Fruit 🍎
Jesus said, “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). If a person or a movement is truly from God, their lives and teachings will reflect His holiness—not just popularity, emotions, or self-promotion.
  4. Pray for Wisdom 🙏
Discernment isn’t just about knowledge—it’s a spiritual gift. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and help you see things through God’s perspective.
  5. Be Willing to Stand Apart 🚶‍♂️
Sometimes discernment means stepping away from what’s popular, even if other Christians don’t see the issue. Be more concerned with pleasing God than fitting in.

Truth Still Matters

The world is full of voices telling us what to believe, but only one voice matters—God’s. In these last days, when deception is everywhere, we can’t afford to be passive about our faith. Jesus calls us to be watchful, wise, and grounded in His Word.

Let’s be the kind of Christians who don’t just accept something because it “feels right” or because it’s labeled as Christian. Let’s be people of truth, led by the Spirit, and unshaken by deception.

Because in the end, what we choose to believe won’t just shape our thinking—it will shape our eternity.

Stay vigilant, stay faithful, and keep shining His light!

Blessings,
